Mr A. M. Burns was a passenger for the North by last night’s ferry steamer. The Hon. J. Barr, M.L.C., and Mr G. Forbes, M.P., were passengers by the ferrj* steamer this morning. The Hon G. W. Russell was a passenger to Christchurch from the north yesterday. Mr 11. Chapman, district railway traffic manager at Christchurch, is at present indisposed, and is confined to bed. Dr H. G. Denham, Professor of Chemistry at Canterbury College, returned to Christchurch yesterday from Wellington. A London cable message states that the Wesleyan Conference elected as the new president the Rev William Hodson Smith, who for fifteen years has been principal of the National Children’s Home.
In view of the resignation of the honorary secretary of the Beautifying Association, Mr G. L. Donaldson, a vote of appreciation of his services was yesterday passed by the association. Messrs P. L. Harrison, manager of the Bank of Montreal, San Francisco, and A. S. Minnion, manager of the foreign department of the same bank, are at present visiting Christchurch. Dr J. Malcolm, Professor of Physiology at Otago University, passed through Christchurch yesterday on his return to Dunedin from Wellington. The death occurred at Wellington yesterday morning of Mr W. M. Muir, aged eighty-four. He was bom in Wellington and lived all his life there. He was employed in early years on the “ Independent" newspaper, and at one time was printer of the “ New Zealand Times.” He was a prominent bowler, well known throughout New Zealand.
