Rugby Asides.
Thus Bernie Fanning, one of the four great lockmen of New Zealand Rugby football, has crystallised the experience of his own playing years:— “Play with your eyes, not with your ears; Don't bother about the referee. Forget that he exists. Some men wait for the referee to make the game for them. These men are just jerseys and pairs of pants—no good to their side. “Teach the men to be original. The men who can’t think a bit, and can’t act promptly up to their thinking, are no good to themselves and no good to their team, and no good to the spectators. Their play is weariness and dreariness. They should have a diet of ginger and fish, which is said to be fine for the brain. “Don't jog-trot when training. Slow jog-trotting makes a sad soui on the field, a Chinaman. Long walking and short sprinting are the best. I found it good to walk a few yards, sprint a few, rest a few moments, and repeat the doses. Smoking at half time is bad and cigarettes are never any good for the bellows. Don’t take any tea at half-time, it may throw the machinery out of gear. In fact, don’t drink anything between the forty-fives of graft. Rinse the mouth out, or chew a bit of orange or lemon.”
