BURGLARS MAKE BIG HAUL FROM SHOP IN PAPANUI ROAD.
USE VEHICLE TO CARRY AWAY ASSORTED SWAG.
Some time on Wednesday night, burglars broke into the Papanui Stores Company’s building on Papanui Road and stole about £SO worth of goods, comprising boxes •of butter, whole cheeses, bags of sugar, bags of Hour, confectionery, tobacco and a qtTantity of drapery.
The thieves had evidently studied the building from the inside before they started operations. All the windows were barred, and the only available entrance was through a wooden sliding door, padlocked from the inside. The thieves bored a number of hales i through the door, caretu.iy avoiding the heavy yin by 2in centre braces. With the aid of an adze taken from anothei shed, they broke a hole through about 24m by Ift, and through this, apparently, one of the party entered and broke oh’ the padlock. The goods were carried a distance of about twenty-live yards and evidently loaded on to a vehicle. There are marks on the footpath of a bag of Hour being dropped. There must have been a great number of journeys made, and it is a wonder that none of the re- , sidents heard anything unusual.
