WELLINGTON RACING CLUB.

| NOTES ON THE RACING. (Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, July M. The conditions were far from pleasant at Trentham tp-day. Rain fell before the first race, and* there were a few showers daring the afternoon, while the wind was bitterly cold. The attendance was scarcely up to the first day's. The course, as was to be expected, was heavy, but not nearly so bad as It has been at some winter meeting's. The racing was Interesting without providing any thrills. Racing opened with the Corinna Hurdle Handicap. Perie do Leon was scratched, leaving a field of thirteen. Bonena was a prominent favourite, with Potoanul arid Vexatious following after good gaps. Inferno led Guncaee, York Abbey and Bevis over the first hurdle. The last-named pair then drew clear, showing the way pa.st the stand with Lady Passenger, Aberfeldy, Inferno, Peshwa and Bonena next. Leaving the straight Bevis opened out a lead of three lengths, being followed past the mile post by York Abbey and Aberfeldy. A furlong further on Aberfeldy was In second place. Bevis was beaten five furlongs from home, Aberfeldy going to the front, where he was Joined by Potoanui, with Kaikahu, Bonena and Guncase leading the others. The order was unchanged as they entered the straight, where Vexatious commenced to move up. Aberfeldy led over the last hurdle, with Kaikahu next. Aberfeldy easslly held his place and won by two i lengths, while Kaikahu Just stalled off a challenge from Vexatious, whom he beat by a good head for second place. Potoanui was fourth, followed by Bonena, Guncase and Peshwa. The winner showed up In the early stages of Tuesday’s race but jumped too big and was beaten a long way from home. Evidently that race worked a great improvement, as he Jumped well right through t.o-day’s contest. Kaikahu ran another good race, and was unlucky to meet the improving Riccarton gelding. The fifteen acceptors lined up for the. Maiden Handicap. Avro was a strong favourite in a big betting race, while after a long interval Cerf, Duke Abbey and Waltzer wc-re evenly backed. Subdivision and Flitters were smartest out, while the colours of Waltzet, Duke Ab- 1 bey and Card Trick were also promln- 1 ent. On reaching the course proper ' Subdivision was well clear of Waltzer, Duke Abbey. Avro and Catapult, who 1 were in close order. A little further j on Duke Abbey put In his claim, gradually wearing Subdivision down. He j went on to win easily by three lengths. Waltzer was fire lengths away, a. length lin front of Avro. After another gap ' j •■ame Tameterangi. Cerf, Catapult and ! Arrow Boy in a line. The , three-year-old. by Quin Abbey, and the , .-style in which he won promises w:i ! for his future. Card Trick Jaded out in ti l * s straight, and was one of the last home. Philanderer was prominent, on reaching the course proper, but soon disappeared. Cornstalk was never sigh ted. The eight acceptors lined up for the .Seatoun Handicap. Peho and Rowley disputed favouritism, Peho winding up with a slight call. Rowley and Rahepoto were firet to break the line, arid they ran along the back with Wild Work, Bronstell and Romantic in close attendance. After going two furlongs Rahepoto and Rowley wore together in the lead, with the order of the others unchanged, Peho and Sir Moment being in the rear. A. furlong further on Rahepoto and Rowley were just clear of Broiistell, while Sir Moment a.nct Royal Head were commencing to move up. Racing for the ctraight .Peho and Wild Work -■were in the rear and there was no change at the end of the false rails, where Rahepoto retired, leaving Rowley In charge, with Romantic, Bronstell, Sir Moment and Royal Head handy. Then Peho put in her claim on the outside, and cutting down the leaders In good style she won easily by nearly a length from Royal Head, “ with Romantic two lengths away, a j neck in front of Rowley, after whom ) came Bronatell and Wild Work. The f winner is a much improved mare, w;ho j will do well In open company next season. Royal Head has developed into j a useful sort. Rowley looked a winner !on reaching the straight, but did not j run on. Wild Work ran a patchy The scratching of Sir Wal left six runners for the Second Hack Steeplechase. llokioi was a warm favourite, carrying nearly twice as much as Maidos, who was second choice, with Taitaiata tho outsider. Maidos soon went to the front, leading The Curragh j and Kirkwood over the first fence. ] When six furlongs had been covered Kirkwood took second place, with The Curragh and Hokloi handy. Passing j the stand with half the journey gone j Maidos was three lengths in front of t tlokioi. who had Kirkwood and The j Curragh in close attendance, while i Comedy Prince and Taitaiata were a : i few lengths away. Kirkwood lost his place a mile from home, and a little further on Hokloi joined Maidos in the lead. Maidos was in trouble at the five furlong post, Hokloi drawing away apparently with the race in hand. Then Taitaiata put in his apeparance. He ran up to Hokloi on reaching the straight, and went on to win easily by five lengths. Kirkwood was fifty yards away, with Maidos fourth. Taitaiata fell on the first day, but his ' jumping yesterday was very sure, while he outstayed his opponents over the j last part of the Journey, llokioi ran a solid race, but apparently he does not stay. Comedy Prince was going well up to the second last fence, where he lost his rider. Sun Up and Indian Sage were withdrawn from the Parliamentary Handicap, leaving a field of fifteen. Chickwheat and Nukumai had n great, battle for favouritism, the former winding up with a slight call. They each carried about twice as much ss Black Mint and Mint Leaf, who headed the i others. Master Doon commenced fast i from wide out, and was In front on i the rails leaving the straight, with , Shining Armour, Queen Arch, Nukumai and Alloway heading the others. The J order was unchanged at the mile post, where Chickwheat also joined in. A little further on Black Mint and Ngata made a forward move, and five furlongs from home they were just bej hind the leading division, which cornI 'prised Master Doon, Shining Armour. Nukumai, Queen Arch and Alloway. Then Mint Leaf joined in. There was no change running round the home ■ turn. Master Doon and Shining Arm- ) our led to the straight, where Nukumai, '.Ngata, Alloway and Black Mint, were all going well. Nukumai put in his I claim when fairly izi line for the post, and he drew up to the leaders without, {apparent effort and strode away to win ; with ridiculous ease by four lengths, iln a great battle for third place Ailoway beat. Master Doon by a head, with ! Black Mint a neck further back. Then | came Shining Armour, Lohd Star, ■ Merry Damon, Ngata and Queen Arch. | The Riccarton representative, Chick--1 wheat, was done with p. long way from j home. Nukumai’s performance made i him look a really good horse, as he outclassed the opposition at the end. Alloway ran a solid race and. lie will be a good horso for big events next season. Ngata looked dangerous at the distance, but failed to finish on. Five scratch logs reduced the field for the High-W*lght Handicap to seventeen Passionate was a decided favourite. Mister Gamp and Beau Cavalier were eamly the best backed of the others. Gold Rain and Glenidle led out of the straight from Merle, Gauntlet and Beau : Cavalier, with Mount Marta bringing up the rear. At the mile post Gold Rain and Merle were showing the way. with Outfit, Beau Cavalier and Royal Abbey heading tho others. Passionate being last. A furlong further on Beau Cavalier had taken charge from Gold Rain and Merle, with Royal Abbey, Outfit, Brigadier Bill and Gauntlet, prominent in tho next bunch. Then Fairy Tid ings and San Pedro moved up. and they were in the front division at the home turn. Merle headed Beau Cavalier at the entrance to tho straight, and Immediately afterwards Fairy Tidings shot to the front. He was out well clear at* the distance and drawing right away he won by ten lengths. Closeflre, fin ishing on well, beat San Pedro by a head for second place. Four lengths back came Beau Cavalier, a neck in front of Passionate, with Brigadier Bill, Merle and Mister Gamp next. The win was the easiest of the meeting. The South Canterbury gelding stayed on surprisingly well, making the others look very ordinary. Gal Hard was the only scratching for the Members* Handicap in a. field of eighteen. King Lu was a hot favourite, while a long way back Solrose and Sun Up were easily the best backed of the others. Sun Up and Gold Box were prominent from tha rise of the barrier, and when the course proper was reached they were still In the front division, with Oration, Delight merit, Whenuanui and Deluge also showing up King Lu was on© of the last t * gut going and be was a long wav bad: tc they raced . U.e coi ike Colling

i clear run r.n the rails Kin Lu joined | the leaders inside the distance, where j Solrose and Miss Hupana also appeared, i King Lu was in front a hundred yards ! from the post, with Solrose second. King Lu drew away to win easily by two j lengths. Miss Hupana got up iri the i last stride to dead head with Solrose i for second place.. Then after o gap and Nincompoop in a bunch. The winner’s performance was exceptionally meritorious after his very slow beginning. Sun Up showed speed but collapsed a long way from home. Nincompoop was going on well at the end. The day's racing concluded with the Petone Handicap, u six furlong hack with Te Kawara and Waieullus disputing second position, and Denier a good fourth choice. Denier’s colours were prominent in front early, while Waicullus, Royal Land ami Cassolette were others who could be seen an they raced for the course proper. Two furlongs from home Coot, wide out, put In hit claim, while Te liawana on tne extreme ; outside also commenced to move up. ; i Cassolette and Royal Land dropped out \ j quickly, while Waicullus also tired over ! ; the last furlong. Denier was then left ! . well clear, and he went on to win by a > length and a half from To Havana, [ who beat Coot by nearly a length. Then came Waicullus, with Thumus, Mountain Jean and Ned Kelly close up. The winner is» a speedy three-year-old by Bisogne. lie paid a surprisingly good price after his first day’s performance. ! TANADEES. AUCKLAND CUP WINNER DESTROYED. (Special to the “ Star.**) WELLINGTON, July 14. { Tanadees was destroyed at Tren- , tham this week. He had been suffer- j ing for some time from a severe attack j of laryngitis, and it was realised that' the case was beyond a complete cure. ; Tanadees, who was bred in Australia, j was five years old. He was a great j galloper in heavy ground. It was to | this he owed his two wins at Trentham ; two years ago at the American Fleet j meeting, and it was in similar condi- j j tions that he won the last Auckland !c ”p- i
