TALKING DIRECT WITH AUCKLAND.
WHAT WILL THE CHARGE FROM CHRISTCHURCH BE? (Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, June 23. It is probable that on Monday next it will be possible for Auckland telephone users to converse with Christchurch. The Secretary of the Post Office, Mr G. M’Namara, stated yesterday that amplifiers for use in conjunction with the new Cook Strait telephone cable had been installed, and a full series of tests were being carried out. The cable had been in use for some time for conversations between Wellington and Blenheim. The Nelson circuit, connecting with Christchurch and intermediate points, had been entirely reconstructed. He did not expect that the through charge would be very greatly above the Auckland and Wellington figures, although a special cable fee would be imposed. The exact charges had yet to be determined.
