OFFICIAL RECORD OF DUNEDIN EXHIBITION IS NOW PUBLISHED.
Memories of the Dunedin Exhibition are revived by the publication of an Official Record by the N.Z. and South Seas Exhibition Company, Ltd. It is a volume that, as the years roll by, will become even more appreciated than it may be to-day, for the reason that now there are hundreds of thousands of people in the Dominion who still have a vivid recollection of the great show, but as time goes on and memories become dim, the Official Record will be a useful reference. Even to-day the Record will be found to be the source of pleasure to those w’ho read it. It contains a great deal of information, written in a readable manner, that many of those who went to the Exhibition had no knowledge of. The volume is most complete. It takes the reader back to the first Dunedin Exhibition of 1865, and covers the history of N.Z. Exhibitions up till 1926. The history of the last Dunedin Exhibition really commences in 1921, with the decision to make a railway deviation at Pelichet Bay, and the complete reclamation of Lake Logan. Then, in 1923, the first steps were taken to arrange an exhibition, when the then Mayor of Dunedin received a deputation on the subject. After a few months, during which the project was kept in view and discussed privately, the matter again came before the public and was taken up with an enthusiasm which, from the outset, made it seem that failure was impossible. Those who visited the Exhibition know the wonderful transformation that was carried out there. Where, a few years before, the sluggish waters of Lake Logan had lapped the foot of the bush-covered hills, huge buildings sprang up, and the Exhibition came into being.
A vivid account of the opening, in November, 1925, is given in the Record, and then follows full details of the many departments of the Exhibition, from the Ilall of Empire to the Amusement Park. The account of the impressive closing ceremonies is fully re-
corded, and, in addition to this, a complete list of the awards made, the financial state of the project, and tables of attendances, etc., is included. The volume is profusely illustrated with interior and exterior views of the buildings and grounds, and a number of historical photographs of the site and surroundings as they appeared many years ago are included. The Official Record was printed for the Otago Master Printers’ Association by Coulls, Somcville, Wilkie, Ltd.
