Mr Vincent H. Freeth (Wellington) arrived by the Manuka this morning and is staying at Warner’s Hotel. Captain H. Monro arrived from Wellington by the Manuka this morning. The lion G. Witty, M.L.C., left Christchurch for Wellington last evening. It was reported at a meeting of the Christchurch Drainage Board last night that Mr Colin Lamb had been appointed junior draughtsman. The Rev Father M. J. Furlong, of Devonport, celebrates the silver jubilee of his ordination as a priest this week. The friends of the Rev G. W. Christian will regret to learn that at present he is a patient at the Christchurch Hospital. Mr F. N. Bartram, M.P. for Grey Lynn, returned to Auckland yesterday after a holiday of seven months in England. Mr A. J. M’Eldowney, the new general secretary of the Y.M.C.A. in Christchurch, arrived yesterday morning from Wanganui. Mr George Vincent, examiner of Trinity College, London, was a passenger from Vancouver by the Aorangi on Sunday. He will adjudicate at the examinations in Auckland. New arrivals at the United Service include: Messrs James Oliver (Auckland), John T. Pettigrew (Wellington), E. Hearnshaw (Wellington), P- M. Neil (Auckland), D. F. Ladin (Wellington) and W. Pulvert (Wellington). Mr H. D. Edwards was, at a meeting of the Wellington Accountant Students' Society, elected a life member “in appreciation of the signal services he has rendered to the society over a period of twenty years.” Mr R. D. Hill, of Wellington, who had the misfortune to break his leg when returning from searching for Messrs Diedrich and Scanlon in the Tarartias, is making good progress towards recovery, and it is not thought likely that he will suffer any permanent effects from the mishap. Mr C. F. Champion, secretary of the Christchurch Drainage Board, completed yesterday his twenty-first year in the service of the board, a circumstance that evoked hearty congratulations from the board members after the monthly meeting last evening. Major C. G. Fitness, who for the last ten years has been in charge of the Salvation Army boys’ training farm at Putaruru, has been appointed manager of the People's Palace, Auckland. Commandant A. Armstrong, of the Eltham Boys’ Home, succeeds Major Fitness at Putaruru, and Major J. Dixon, of the People’s Palace, Auckland, takes charge I of the Eltham Boys’ Home, j Mr George Cooper, late manager of Messrs James J. Niven and Co., Ltd., Christchurch, has been appointed manager at Invercargill for Messrs Booth, Macdonald, Ltd. Mr Barrell, the late manager at Invercargill, has been appointed the company’s inspector for the North Island.

The delegation appointed by the New Zealand branch of the Institute of Pacific Relations to attend the conference at Honolulu in July consists of Dr P. H. Buck (Auckland), Messrs J. E. Strachan, M.A. (Rangiora), W. 11. Cocker, B.A. (Auckland), W. Nash (secretary New Zealand Labour Party) and Rev W. Mawson (Auckland). On the motion of Mr A. E. M’Phail, chairman of the ..executive of the Canterbury Rugby Union, that body decided at last night’s meeting to send a letter of sympathy to the relatives of the late Mr J. R. Olliver, editor of the “New Zealand Referee.” The mover stated that Mr Olliver had always been a keen supporter of Rugby football. The motion was carried in silence, members standing. At a meeting of the Christchurch Drainage Board last night the chairman, Mr 11. J. Otley, made reference to the death of Mr S. A. Staples. Mr Otley said that Mr Staples had been an old member of the board and was on it for a long time. lie was chairman of the Finance Committee, and he did a large amount of work. On the motion of the chairman the secretary was instructed to write to the nearest relatives of the late Mr Staples expressing the board’s appreciation of liis services.
