DRAINAGE BOARD DISCUSSES WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED.
At a meeting: of the Christchurch Drainage Board last night a letter was read from the Citizens’ Unemployment Committee asking the board to adopt a scheme of a levy of 3d a week on wages, such sum to be subsidised by the board. The chairman (Mr IT. J. Otle3'): It would have to be understood that such contributions were voluntary. I don’t think we have the power to subsidise lanv contributions. Mr W. J. Walter said that the best
way to help the unemployed was to get oil with authorised works. lie moved that the Works Committee be recommended to get on immediately with any works passed. The secretary said it would be advisable to obtain an opinion from the board’s solicitor before a subsidy was considered.
