LIN WOOD LIBRARY SUBSCRIBERS HOLD ANNUAL MEETING.
The eighteenth annual meeting' of the subscribers of the Linwood Public Library was held last evening, Mr J. A. Flesher presiding. The following officers were elected:— Patron, Mr J. A. Flesher; president, Mr C. P. Rutland; vice-presidents, Councillors M. E. Lyons, J. W. Roberts, and D. G. Sullivan, M.P., and Messrs C. J. Cox, H. Burson, A. Bunker and IX Richardson; Messrs W. AV. Tanner and IX Richardson; auditors, Messrs A. Brettell and H. E. Salvesen; committee, Messrs F. W. Burson, H. J. Bowlker, S. E. Byford, A. Brettell, M. J. Clark, D. Davis, A. S. Forrester, H. AV. Friedman, A. N. Grant, G. N. Haylev, E. A. Harris, AV. H. Main, H. Muff, F. J. Xash, M. Rolls, A. E. Salvesen, E. G. Thomas, AV. T. Vaughan, AV. G. AA r illiams and E. E. AViltshire. _ _ At a meeting of the committee held after the general meeting, the following were added to the committee:—Messrs D. ('arson, D. Coates, T. H. Hopkins, L. R. P. Higgott, C. A. M’Causland, G. X. Ormandy, C. Prime and M. Foster. Mr E. G. Thomas was elected treasurer and Mr E. E. AViltshire secretary. The committee’s report stated that the number of subscribers on the books at the close of the year totalled 1705, an increase of twelve on last year’s figures. Five hundred and sixty new members joined, whilst 54 8 resigned, the numbers in both cases being very close to those of last year. The highest total eve’* achieved during the history of the library was recorded during the year, viz., 1724 subscribers, which number was reached during July last. The number of books added to the library was 1554, an average of 132 per month, a creditable average. The number of books discarded had been again heavy. 1134 volumes having been removed from the shelves, leaving a net increase of 446 books for the year, or 13,766 volumes actually on the shelves and in circulation. The assets of the library represented £1667 12s 4d, whilst the liabilities were £34 14s 4d. _ The amount spent upon books, periodicals, magazines and newspapers during the year was £533 6s 3d. The total sum received from subscribers was £740 3s 3d, £444 35s being from subscriptions and £295 8s 3d from extra books lent. The committee expressed their appreciation of the very capable and efficient manner in which Miss Burfitt, as caretaker and assistant librarian, had fulfilled her duties.
