NEW REGULATIONS CAUSE QUEER TOTE RESULTS IN N.S.W.

NO DIVIDEND FOR BACKERS OF WINNER. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright Aus. and X.Z. Cable Association. (Received June 22, 10.15 a.tn.) SYDNEY. June 22. The totalisator at Gosford races, operating on the recently introduced regulations, showed some queer results. In one race, although the bookmakers’ quotation for the winning horse was 4 to 1, the totalisator investors only received their money back, so, although they backed the winner, they did not win. The only ones who benefited were those who backed the favourite, which ran third. In the ordinary case they would have received less than their investment, but under the new rules they had to receive their money back. Altogether 344 tickets were issued, 286 being on placed horses. In another race the first stance occurred of the totalisator not holding sufficient money to return to each backer the amount of his original investment. Five hundred and twentyeight tickets, equalling £132, were issued. When the regulation 12£ per cent had been deducted £lls 10s remained for division, whereas £ll6 was required.

With a view to popularising the totalisator, the revenue from which for some time had shown a decreasing tendency, the Government framed new regulations operating from May 25. The chief amendment is that whenever possible all dividends shall be calculated so as to ensure that each investor on a placed horse will receive a return of not less than the unit of the investment on which the totalisator is operated. This ensures that backers of placed horses will at least receive their money back. The alteration in the law also provides that there will be two dividends if there are not less than four and not more than seven starters, and three dividends if there are eight or more starters. The ratios of division for a three dividend race of the amount available for distribution is fixed at 50 per cent for the first horse, 30 per cent for the second and 20 per cent for the third. The ratios for one and two-dividend races remain unaltered.
