JEWISH ENVOY TO VISIT DOMINION.

WORK OF ORGANISING PALESTINE TO BE TOLD. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, June 20. The Auckland Zionist Society has received advice by cable from Dr Alexander Goldstein, who is at in Australia, that he will leave for New Zealand at the end of this month arid will open his Dominion campaign in Auckland on July 5. Dr Goldstein, who is a member of the General Council of the Zionist organisation, left Jerusalem in January as an envoy to Jewish communities in India, the Far East, Dutch Indies, Australia and New Zealand. He is one of the leading figures of the world-wide movement for the rebuilding of the Jewish homeland in Palestine. A graduate in the law faculty at the University of Petrograd, he joined the Zionist movement in 1901, and by reason of his unusual gifts as orator and organiser he soon became one of the leaders of Russian Jewry. He has made his mark in journalism, and has won distinction as a literary critic. In 1917 he was elected a member of the Russian Parliament. In 1919 he was elected to represent three million Jews of the Ukraine on the of Jewish delegations at the Peace Conference in Paris. This committee succeeded in having incorporated in the peace treaties w’ith those countries where the Jewish population was subject to persecution and restrictive and oppressive legislation highly important provisions for the protection of Jewish rights. These by virtue of minority clauses in the peace treaties with Poland, Rumania, Hungary and Austria are safeguarded by the League of Nations.

In addition to his appeal for Zionist institutions in Palestine Dr Goldstein’s visit will be of an educational nature. He will explain the work which has been accomplished and the difficulties and special problems which confront the Zionist organisation. In the mandate for Palestine recognition was given to the historical connection of the Jewish people with Palestine. The Balfour Declaration was embodied in the mandate and the Zionist organisation was recognised as an appropriate Jewish agency to co-oper-ate with the administration of Palestine in such economic, social and other matters as may affect the establishment of a Jewish national home aiid the interests of the Jewish population in Palestine., The mandate also provided that the Zionist organisation should take steps in consultation with Great Britain to secure the co-opera-tion of all Jews who were willing to assist in the establishment of the Jewish national home.

During his tour Dr Goldstein has everywhere had an enthusiastic reception from Jewish communities and from State and civic authorities. While in the Dominion he will visit the four chief cities, and committees have been formed in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin to ensure that the objects of his visit will receive an adequate response. Dr Goldstein is the bearer of a letter from Earl Balfour setting forth the purpose of his visit, and expressing the hope that all who are interested in the Zionist movement will give him what assistance is in their power.
