SHOULD BISHOPS SMOKE AND DRINK BEER?

LONDON, May 2. Should bishops drink beer, smoke tobacco and encourage fox-hunt : .ng? This question was raised yesterday at a Baptist meeting at Northampton by Mr O. S. Whiting, an ex-Mayor of the borough. “You have just been welcoming the new Bishop of Peterborough to Northampton,” Mr Whiting said, “ and I notice the local papers gave prominence to the fact that he smoked and drank beer. “ The other day another bishop was presented with the brush of a fox because he gave the 1 halloo ’ to direct the hunt to pursue the animal to death. “I cannot conceive how a man in that exalted position could support blood sports. We want men who not only preach good sermons, but lead good lives. We do not want men who support fox-hunting, who smoke and drink beer, but men with the highest ideals, to fill our episcopal bench.”
