TEARING UP THE ROADS.
To the Editor. Sir.—Yes. There is only one solution for the wasteful local body over-lap-ping that exists in Christchurch—a Metropolitan Board, of Works. The member for Fendalton riding on the Waimairi County Council definitely admitted as much in a letter to the “Star” last week. He showed how even on County Council property, the Tramway Board, the Drainage Board, the Gas Company, and the Public Works Department can come along and tear up the roads when they like without notifying the council. Surely it is time that this Gilbertian situation ended. Soaring rates are one result, and disgraceful streets another. There was a time -when a prominent Labour M.P. and City Councillor threatened to move Heaven and earth to bring about local body amalgamation and the establishment of a Metropolitan Board of Works. However, being now firmly established in power, he seems to have forgotten all about that promise. Will Mr Kitson take his place? He could start by persuading Fendalton to become, as it ougnt to be, part of Greater Christchurch, and not continue to exist as the ill-considered appendage of a County Council.—l am, etc., VICTIM.
