WOOLSTON ARE UNLUCKY TEAM.

MAGISTRATE HEARS ABOUT KEG OF BEER

The Woolston League team are unlucky. Last >-ear they couldn’t win a match. This year they did win a match, and their decision fittingly to celebrate by the aid of a keg of beer this milestone in their progress to championship honours resulted in police action. The Alagistrate, Mr 11. P. Lawr3', >vas told this morning all about the -delivery of the keg. Yes, Woolston are unluck>-. Mr Sargent appeared for John Joseph Dore, licensee of the Roj'al George Hotel, who was charged with having supplied the liquor after hours. Air Sargent’s explanation of the position made it clear that the purchase of the beer was a carefully deliberated act by the club. It was no spasmodic raid for beer by irresponsible unauthorised members. The committee of the club met during the week and decided that the win over Sydenham on the preceding Saturday should be celebrated. The committee decided that a five-gallon keg of beer would facilitate the celebrations, and conform with the well-established precedent in such cases, and to that end appointed one of its number to make the purchase. Air Sargent offered to put the secretary (and his minute book) into the box to prove these facts. On the afternoon preceding the celebration Woolston had to play at Hornby. The luck that had pai'd them a fleeting , visit on the preceding Saturday had deserted them, however. The match started late and as a result they got back to town too late to hear the familiar “Six o’clock, please.” However, the officials delegated by the committee to purchase the beer had previously discharged that important dut}'. It had been left at the hotel to be picked up after the match. While it was being picked up, Woolston’s constable came along. Hence the bother. The Alagistrate promised to consider Air Sargent’s submission that s no offence had been committed by the licensee, and the case adjourned till this afternoon.
