Some important resolutions regarding the teaching of civics and internationalism were adopted by the Council of Education at a meeting last week It was resolved: “That the council considers that every opportunity should be taken in schools to promote the ideals of social service; and that the council, being impressed with the paramount need for educative work in the direction of international knowledge as an indispensable preliminary for international goodwill and service, recommends the Department to utilise more fully the 4 School Journal ’ and the ‘ Education Gazette' for the purpose of familiarising schools with the organisation and activities of the League of Nations and the ideals of the union.” Pleasure was expressed at the increasing support being accorded the Boy Scout and Girl Guide movements, and the council approved the growing appreciation of the cultural value of music. A resolution was passed urging the Department to require teachers to give instruction in swimming at all schools where reasonable facilities exist.
