LOCAL BRANCH OF FORESTRY LEAGUE HOLDS A MEETING.

SWISS CHALET IN SHOW GROUNDS IS PROPOSED

Ihe annual meeting of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Forestry League was held last evening. Mr . H. Winsor being in the chair. Others present were: Dr C. Chilton, the Hon D. Buddo, Messrs C. E. Foweraker, W. Goss, James Young, D. Bates, T. P. Scott, J. Y. Shand, G. L. Bull and R. Browning (secretary). The annual report stated that the proposal brought before the last annual meeting by Mr James Deans relative to the erection of a building on thav lines of a Swiss chalet, on the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s grounds, for the purpose of housing the league’s exhibits, has taken definite shape during the year. At one of the earlier meetings of the committee, the principle of carrying out the project was affirmed, and the following applications made :—To the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association for permission to erect the building; to the Government to provide financial assistance in the matter of supplying the necessary timbers from the Hanmer Springs plantations; to the Christchurch Builders’ Association for their co-operation. The Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association had granted the permission asked for. The State Forest Service had agreed to supply the necessary larch logs free of cost to the railhead at Culverden, while the Christchurch Builders’ Association had notified its intention of donating the sum of £SO towards supplying labour in the erection of the building. Mr Roy Lovell Smith, A.N.Z.1.A., supplied a plan of the proposed building, free of cost, and this plan had been adopted by the committee. Mr J. F. Scott, a "member of the committee, offered to supply the macrocarpa necessary for the roof of the building, and this offer hac been accepted with thanks. It was hoped to have the building completed in time for occupation for the next A. and P. Show in November. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £B4 11s 9d. In moving the adoption of the annual report, the chairman said that the necessary timber from the Hanmer Springs plantations was being cut, and he supported the suggestion previously made that application should be made for the free transport of the timber. He was pleased to be able to say that it was possible to get all the macrocarpa that was required from Mr Scott’s property. What was still required was someone to offer to cut 17,000 shingles for roofing purposes. This would be a big job, but it was to be hoped that an offer would be forthcoming. It was believed that the display made by the league at the show was greatly appreciated. In seconding the adoption of the report, Mr Foweraker stated that a number of lantern slides on the subject of forestry had been secured, and Mr Archer and he himself were prepared to give lectures during the ensuing year. Mr Buddo suggested that application be made for a grant from the Minister in charge and the Forestry , Department to defray the cost of trans- 1 porting the timber from Culverden to the Show Grounds in the event of the Railway Department being unable to do so free. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following officers w r ere elected for the ensuing year-.—Chairman, Mr W. H. Winsor; vice-chairman. Dr Acland; committee, Dr H. T. D. Acland, Messrs W. A. Banks and M. Bethell, Ur Charles Chilton, Messrs M. Dalziel, James Deans, C. E. Foweraker, William Goss, W. W. Mulholland, R. Nairn, H. Rosindale, W. H. Winsor, J. Young, David Bates, J. F. Scott, G. L. Bull and J. W. Graham; secretary and treasurer, Mr R. Browning; honorary auditor, Mr J. A. B. Cookson. A letter from the secretary of the New Zealand L.eague (Wellington) asked that a representative of the Canterbury branch should attend the annual meeting. The chairman said that he considered it would be a good idea if a remit were sent forward suggesting that future annual meetings should be held in other centres, with a view to stimulating interest in forestry matters in those districts. It was decided to forward a remit on these lines to the annual meeting and to leave the selection of a representative in. the hands of the committee.
