WORK TO BE DONE ON WAIMAKARIRI.
CUT PROPOSED TO DIVERT EYRE RIVER. The Waimakariri River Trust yesterday decided, Messrs F. W. Freeman and R. O. Dixon dissenting, to call for tenders for making the cut from the Eyre River to the Waimakariri. When the trust's main scheme, involving: an expenditure of £200.000, Avas rejected by the ratepayers, a poll was carried in the Eyre-Cust rating area for the improvement of the Eyre and Cust Rivers. There were originally two propositions in the district, one providing for diverting the Eyre into the Waimakariri at Evreton, and the other for a stop-bank all the way from the point of diversion to Kaiapoi. This -would prevent flood water from going down through Kaiapoi. Because it was considerably cheaper, the first proposal was approved. The distance of the cut will be three miles. After members of the trust had spent some time yesterday examining the plans, it was decided to proceed with the work, and to invite tenders for carrying it out. The Works Committee was asked to present a report to the next meeting of the trust on the building of a bridge over the cut.
