HE QUARRELLED WITH THE HUSBAND OF HIS DIVORCED WIFE.
FAMILY TROUBLES END IN MAGISTRATE’S COURT. Leonard Armstrong, a short, slight man of about thirty-five years of age, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court this morning on a charge of assaulting Charles Smith. The case was heard by Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M. Senior-Sergeant Martin prosecuted, and Mr Moloney appeared for the accused. Charles Smith, a labourer, gave evidence that he had married accused’s divorced wife, and that she was in charge... Of Accused was keeping company With a Miss . Smith was not living with his wife, but at the house of his mother. On the night of the alleged assault he had been visited by Armstrong, who, after some words, struck him in the mouth. To Mr Moloney: He had written to Miss ’s parents about Armstrong, and also to his employer. He had wanted to keep his own home quiet. He had immediately reported the occurrence of the blow to the police. Mrs Smith, mother of the previous witness, declared that she had heard the sound of a blow, and had seen her son with blood oozing from his mouth. Armstrong was in the room, and left when she ordered him off the premises. Armstrong, in the. witness-box, said that he had not assaulted Smith. He had called because Smith had been trying to blacken his character to Miss had passed between the two men, and Smith had jostled Armstrong. Senior-Sergeant Martin: Did his mouth just make itself bleed on your fist? The Magistrate convicted Armstrong of assault, and fined him 30s and costs. An order to suppress his name was refused.
