Mr and Mrs P. Acton Adams, Ivaikoura, are staying at Warner’s Hotel. Mr and Mrs Scott, Miss E. Scott and Miss Mai Scott, Timaru, are staying at Warner’s Hotel. Mrs James Kennedy and son, of Ariiberley, are spending a holiday at Timaru. Mr and Mrs George Rutherford (Papanui Road) have returned from a trip to Nelson and Marlborough. Miss Rhoda Barwick has returned home after spending a long holiday with Mrs J. S. M’Clelland, of Southbridge. Miss Thelma Green has returned to Christchurch after spending a few days with Miss Gertrude Schimanski, of Norwood.

Mr and Mrs Robert Latter, Barry’s Bay, are spending an extended holiday at New Brighton. Mr and Mrs Ilagairty, Sydney, arrived in Christchurch last evening and are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr and Mrs Manton and Miss Manton, Wellington, and Mrs L. Macfarlane, Kaiwara, are guests at Warner's Hotel. Mr and Mrs A. Carlson, accompanied by their two sons, Arthur and Milton, left on Monday evening for Wellington en route to California where they intend to reside. The engagement is announced of Edna Mary, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs H. W. Heslop (Sumner), to Clifford Samuel, only son of Mr and Mrs S. Gibbs, “Woodlea,” Papanui Road. A successful euchre and dance was held in the Woolston Druids’ Hall on Saturday evening. This was the fifth of a series run by the Social Committee of the Woolston Library.. Eighty players took part. After supper had been served, dancing was indulged in until midnight, in which over fifty couples took part. The euchre prizewinners are as follow:—Ladies, Miss F. M’Guire I, Mrs F. Newton 2; men, Mr B. C. Brown 1, Mr C. E. Baldwin 2. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs W. Perkins and Mr G. Randall. Mr C. Lilburne acted as M.C., and Mr C. White supplied the music. Mr and Mrs A. Schimanski gave an enjoyable evening recently, at their residence, “Melrose,” Norwood, in honour of the birthday of their daughter, Gertrude. The rooms were decorated with coloured streamers and greenery. The evening was spent in dancing and games, and a competition was won by Miss Rankin and Mr Peters. Adkins, Salisbury Street, a very enjoyable evening was spent recently ill honour of Mrs Adkins's son, Mr Hector Napier, who is on a holiday visit from Bendigo, Australia. Aitkens, Wellington; and Mrs and Miss King, Timaru. The annual meeting of the women’s branch of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association was held last Friday afternoon, Mrs S. Adkins in the chair. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs G. Cooper; vice-presidents, Miss Tabart and Mrs S. Adkins; corresponding and recording secretaries, Mrs J. M’Cracken and Mrs A. Boyce; committee, Mesdames A. Tutill, R. Spencer, G. Hassel, A. Pricker, G. Robertson, F. East, W. J. Jenkin, F. T. Bishop and P. Sowden. Mr Marriner reported that the plans for the coming Winter Show were well in hand and that the various stalls would be allotted shortly. Miss Tabart also addressed the meeting. Miss Dickinson displayed samples of pottery made by women in New Zealand, the work being greatly admired. A pleasant function took place on Saturday afternoon last, when, at the invitation of the Rev S. J. Werren and Mrs Werren a number of old residents of Sherborne Street and members of the Edgeware Road Methodist Church met at the reverend gentleman’s residence in Cranford Street, to meet and congratulate Mrs C. Nicholson, of Sherborne Street, on her attaining her ninetieth birthday. The Rev Samuel Lawry, one of the oldest ministers of the Methodist ministry, in eulogistic terms, referred to Mrs Nicholson’s connection with the church in her earlier years, and pointed out the fact that the lady was now the oldest living member of the Edgeware Road circuit. Mrs Ford also spoke of the valuable work accomplished by Mrs Nicholson, particularly in connection with the Sunday school. The Rev Mr Werren also congratulated Mrs Nicholson on attaining such an age, and hoped that health and every prosperity would be ' her good fortune in her declining years. After the addresses Miss Margaret Wen ren presented Mrs Nicholson with a bouquet of flowers, and wished her a happy birthday. Mr Melville Lawry contributed pianoforte selections, and the singing of “Abide With Me” brought the gathering to a close. Afternoon tea was dispensed by Mrs Werren, and the ladies of the guild. Amongst those present were the Rev Samuel Lawry, Mr and Mrs Melville Lawry, the Rev S. J. Werren and Mrs Werren, Miss Foster, Mesdames G. and F. Lucas, Don, Ford, Phillpot, Moor and M’Davitt.

Mr and Mrs Senior Lawrence, Merivale, have returned to Christchurch from a visit to Auckland. Mr and Mrs Shipway, Sydney, arrived in Christchurch this morning and are staying at the United Service Hotel.

The engagement is announced of Muriel, younger daughter of Mr -and Mrs J. Willoughby, Peraki Street, Ivaiapoi, to Herbert, eldest son of Mr and Mrs H. Dale, East Belt, Rangiora. The weekly gathering of the Addington Euchre Assembly was held on Saturday night in the Selwyn Street Hall. The following were the winners of prizes: Ladies—Miss S. Haw 1, Mrs S. Haw 2, Mrs Browning 3, Mrs Brown 4, Mrs Kent 5. Men—Mr Ilutton 1, Mr Markham 2, Mr Hahn 3, Mr Hurrell 4, Mr Costello 5.

An enjoyable evening was spent at the residence of Mr and/ Mrs J. Curragh, Templeton, recently, to celebrate the coming-of-age of their eldest daughter, Violet. The room was decorated with streamers of mauve and violet suspended from the ceiling. The everting was spent in games, competitions, dancing and musical items. The usual toast was proposed by Mr C. Ilunton and was suitably responded to by Mr 11. J. Curragh. Mrs J. Curragh received her guests wearing a frock of black crepe de chine, relieved with lace. The members of the Rangiora Tennis Club entertained a party of ladies from the Avonside Club, who visited them yesterday afternoon and played an enjoyable tournament at the Rangiora courts. Mrs J. C. Lord arranged the match, and the visitors -were welcomed by Mr Palariet, who apologised for the absence of the president. He said the local players apprecated the compliment paid them by the city club, which had sent its best players to try conclusion with them. The games were all doubles, and many of the sets were keenly contested, but, as was to be expected, considering the personnel of the Avonside team, the country players were but not too easily. Prizes for the two players winning the greatest number of games were presented by Mr Palariet, and won by Miss May Spiers and Mrs Beale. Avonside was represented by Miss May Spiers, Mrs Beale, Mrs Bullock, Mrs Sharp, Mrs Angus Donaldson, Miss Dorman, Miss Gillanders and Miss Dorothy Allard, and the Rangiora players were Miss Gregg, Miss Guy, Miss Schulter, Miss Emma Borrowes, Mrs J. Kinley, Mrs Bell, Mrs Shankland and Mrs Deal.
