JURY FAIL TO AGREE IN AUCKLAND CASE.
(Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND. May 7. After five hours’ deliberation in the Supreme Court yesterday the jury cmpannelled to try William Jenkins on a charge of committing an offence against a young girl, announced that they could, not agree and a new trial was ordered for next week. Accused is an elderly farmer living at Glenfield, Birkenhead. The case was peculiar in that the girl in her evidence in both the Magistrate's Court and Supreme Court had repudiated a written statement' given by her to a detective. Accused had also repudiated a statement given by him admitting that he had attempted to commit an offence, lie accused the detective of fabricating the document.
