GALLANT GIRL SAVES MAN FROM DEATH IN RIVER.

LEAPED FROM BRIDGE AND DRAGGED WOULD-BE SUICIDE FROM WATER; GAVE HIM £1 TO HELP HIM. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, May 7. About 3.30 yesterday afternoon a young woman named Betty Facer, ■while walking across Dublin Street bridge, noticed a man jump off the bridge into the river. She discarded some clothing, jumped into the water, and after a struggle with the man pulled him ashore. He declared he was down in his luck and had no friends. She gave him £1 to help him on his way. (Special to the “ Slar.”) WANGANUI, May 7. Miss Facer, who made a plucky rescue yesterday afternoon, bears several marks in the region of her throat, the effects of a struggle with a man in the river. There were plenty of people crossing the bridge at the time, but as she had almost lost her voice through a recent attack of influenza, her calls for help could not be heard. She kicked the man to make him release his hold, and then dragged him ashore. She saw active service during the war, and is a member of the St John Division. She has been in New Zealand two years. Her first position was that of a maid in the employ of the Prime Minister. The police were unable to locate the man to-day, who answers the description of a middle-aged, tall man, who has been dodging round the city during the past few days.
