RICCARTON NOTES.

OPENING A NEW CHURCH. The opening and dedication service of St Ninian’s Presbyterian Church in Puriri Street, will be held next Saturday afternoon, at three o’clock. The new building is of stone; and is a very handsome structure, just leaving the builders’ hands. Complete arrangements have been made for the opening ceremony, with special anthems by the choir, and special addresses. A very large assemblage of Presb3 T terians and well-wishers from all parts of the district is expected to be present. Holy Communion will be celebrated on Sunday, when the special services will be continued. WELCOME HOME SOCIAL. The “welcome home” tendered to Mr J. Sander.*, Riccarton’s representative in the Rugbv League team which toured England and Wales, was well attended and very enjoyable. The decorations included the colours of Wharenui School, of which Mr Sanders had been a pupil, and of the Addington Football Club, for which he plays. Mr J. J- Stevens presided. The speakers were Messrs H. S. ,S. Kyle, M.P., Mayor of Riccarton, Winter Cole, Lloyd and Elmcs, who sang, “ Home, Sweet Home,” the chorus being taken up by those present. Mr Bruce Estell was pianist for the dance, and Mr Lloyd M.C., Mrs Borthwick and Miss Meharry playing extras. Lucky spot, streamer and confetti dances caused much merriment. Messrs Lockhart and Klmes contributed songs, and Mr Bruce, jun., a cornet solo, Mrs Borthwick playing the accompaniments. MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. That there is a healthy public spirit in Riccarton is evidenced by the large number of candidates for municipal honours. For the Mayoralty, Mr H. Manhire is definitely announced, and Mr A. D. Ford, a former Mayor, is mentioned as probable. So far there are twelve seekers for the Citizens’ Association’s label, namely, Messrs Ford, Gudsell, Peters, Rankin (present counsillors), Fernandez, Hepburn, R. G. Malcolmson, Ormandy, C. Richardson, I L. Smith and H. Telford. It is expected that Labour will run a full ticket, but the selection is to be made. The Citizens’ Association will meet on Wednesday to select the , “ ticket,” and a full meeting is expected. THE ROYAL ARCH.^ The Borough Council is erecting an arch at the junction of Straven and Riccarton Roads, in honour of the Royal visitors, who will pass under the arch on their way to the Wigram Aerodrome. MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. Should the Riccarton Citizens’ Association affiliate with the United Burgesses’ Association ? The question was discussed at Monday's meeting, most of the speakers opposing the idea on i the grounds that Riccarton was a self-contained borough, whilst the other associations were mostly concerned with city affairs. On the other hand, some speakers were strongly of opinion that co-operation with kindred organisations must result in benefit to the whole. The Borough Council has asked the Drainage Board to attend to the main drain through the borough. The opinion is freely expressed that it is high time for the drain to be closed The council audit is very late again. The Audit Department is being asked to expedite it. Contractors for sewerage reticulation have made a start in Matipo Street. Items of interest to Riccarton people are invited. Please leave contributions at Piper’s Store, corner Clarence Street and Riccarton Road, or at Garton's Store, opposite Clyde Road.
