INQUEST HELD ON MOTOR SMASH VICTIM.

The inquest into the circumstances surrounding ihfe death of Edwin John Leatham was continued this afternoon before Mr 11. A. Young, S.M. Mr C. S. Thomas appeared on behalf of R. P. Grant, the driver of the car that hit Leatham, and Mr A. W. Brown for the relatives of Leatham.

Sergeant Macnamara was present on behalf of the police. The accident occurred on Riccarton Road on the evening of February 5. Leatham was crossing the road, -wheeling a bicycle and carrying the frame of another bicycle on his shoulder. He was struck by a car travelling south, driven by Robert Patrick Grant, o: Yaldhurst. Manners Eltham Edwards, a horse trainer, of Yaldhurst, who was in th front seat of the car driven by Gran gave evidence that the car was proceeding south by Euuton Street when th:* accident occurred. Leatham stepped across the road from left to right, turn ing to face the car just before it struck him. The car was travelling from fifteen to miles per hour. It contained six passengers. He saw’ Leatha mstep back a pace just before the car struck him. The road was bad, and the car was swerving over to. the left to enter a section of the road where half was closed. If Leathern had continued on, he might have been njjssed There were cars going in the opposite direction at the time with glaring headlights.
