GUNNERS RETURN TO CITY AFTER WEEK’S CAMP.
Sun-tanned and fit, over one hundred officers and men of the Tenth Battery returned to Christchurch last night after having spent a week under canvas- at Hoinebush, where the annual shoot was held.
Undergoing a rigid course of training with the eighteen-pounders, the men, during their stay in camp, revealed a remarkable improvement in their work compared with their performance at last year's shoot, and Miijor A. A. M'Lean, O.C. of the battery, said yesterday that he was very pleased with the discipline and the work of the men during their short period of continuous training. The men were given little time to themselves while in camp, but they did not complain, and, entering into their work with a true soldierly spirit, they showed that their boast that the tenth is the best battery of the brigade was no weak claim. They were given their initial test on Saturday last, when the first shoot was held, and they showed what they could do with their guns, and that night, shortly before twelve o’clock, they were called from their beds without warning, and in a remarkably short space of time they were again in action, this time with blank ammuniTheir efficiency in gun drill, and their capacity to go about work with a minimum of noise were shown on the occasion of the night alarm. \\ itli the live shells, they revealed their ability to send them just where they were needed. Monday’s shoot was a great success .—even more so than Saturday s. I lie artillerymen brought their camp to a conclusion with a concert on Monday night.
