NEARING THE FINAL IN CHESS CONGRESS.
Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, December 31. At the chess congress the following was the end of the fifth round: Roberts v. Bullock.— Roberts with his extra pawns at the adjournment forced the game, which is still in the balance. Both players qualify. Fouhy v. Davies.—Davies played patiently against the handicap of losing a piece in the opening, and eventually won the game, which is entered for the “best recovery” prize. Fairburn v. Jones. —Fairburn won and qualified. Pleasants v. Dtmlop.- -Dunlop won. Both qualified. Burry v. Kelling.—Kelling, with &xtra material, gained early in the game, eventually won. Kelling qualifies. Burry is out. Erskine v. Fenwick.—Erskine won and qualified. Fenwick is out of the final. Miller v. Moir.—Moir won. Both Miiler and Moir have qualified. The final section will commence, this afternoon.
