WELLINGTON GETS BIG WIN OVER OTAGO TEAM.

PLUNKET SHIELD GAME SEES VISITORS BEATEN BY OVER 400 RUNS.

Wellington have made an auspicious start in this season’s series of Plunket Shield matches, gaining an overwhelming victory by 146 runs over Otago in the initial match, which concluded at the Basin Reserve. Wellington’s two strikes realised 448 and 379 respectively. Otago could reach no further than 207 in their first innings, and were faced with the tremendous task of knocking up 620 on a crumbled wicket in order to stave off defeat. The southern leading batsmen did not fare too well. When stumps were drawn yesterday six wickets had fallen for 122. Upon resuming to-day Otago met disaster almost immediately, Zimmerman being sent back after scoring only a single. Blamires was unable to make a long stay. Torrance could not survive tjhe opening ball. Green, the visitor’s wicketkeeper, who makes no claim to batsmanship, came to light with a forcing knock for 30. and 11. C. Alloo, who carried his bat. shaped soundly. However, after a fairly lucrative last wicket stand the end came at 174. Wellington thus won by 446 runs. Following are the scores:—

Having been beaten by Auckland, Canterbury are now in this position that they will have to beat both Wellington and Otago to be in the running for the Plunket Shield.
