FALLING ROCK HITS WOMAN MOUNTAINEER.
NARROW ESCAPE FROM DEATH ON MT. EGMONT. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH. December 30. , High tip on the slopes of Mount Egmont to-day a distressing accident occurred. Mrs Marks, of Hamilton, having both legs broken by a rock which became detached from the mountain-side and rolled down amongst a party consisting of Mr and Mrs Marks and Mr and Mrs Williams, all of Hamilton, i The party, who had been staying at the North Egmont Hostel for several days, left the hostel without guides on a climb to the summit this morning. When within lifteen hundred feet of the top Mrs Marks was some distance ahead of the party, one of whom saw a rock tumbling down the steep moun-tain-side. and called out to Mrs Marks but too late to avert the accident. The big stone crashed into the woman’s legs, badly smashing one and cracking I the bone of the other. A member of the party immediatelv ! left for the hostel, whence a party set out with a stretcher. Then commenced a tortuous descent over shifting scoria and a slippery track. The hostel was reached late this afternoon and the injured woman at i once, conveyed to New Plymouth Hospital.
