GARDEN NOTES FOR THE WEEK.
KITCHEN GARDEN. Seeds to sow.—Beans, cabbage, endive, lettuce, onions (for salad), parsley, peas, radish, spinach, turnip. What to plant—Broccoli, cabbage, celery, leeks, winter greens. Autumn sown onions need watching. Many may need a check to prevent the bulbs from slitting. As all the bulbs will not complete their growth at the same time, it is advisable to go over the bed and carefully lift those that, are fully grown and gradually ripen them before storing in a cool shed. Don’t have the bulbs on damp ground. Put them on a hard dry bottom and cover them from rain. Runner beans that are half way up their supports should have the ends of the leading shoots pinched off to encourage lateral shoots and an early supply of beans. Broad beans that are finished should be pulled up at once and buried in a trench,, instead of being left to brown before, burial.
FLOWK R GARDEN. Most plants are growing fast and gardens are looking splendid. Many of the early summer plants are nearly Remove al! spent blossoms from sweet peas or much seed will form. Climbing roses should be examined and some of the useless wood cut away to make room for new shoots. The strong growths from the base are most useful, but they need room to develop. The most common mistakes made in the. management of climbing roses is to retain too many of the old shoots. All climbing roses give the best of blooms from wood one year old, and the only way to provide space for new shoots is to cut away some of the old ones. When fastening the new shoots, do not fasten them too tightly.
