CHRISTCHURCH MAN GAINS FASTEST TIME IN BIG RACE.
WELLINGTON ROAD EVENT HELD IN WET AND WINDY WEATHER. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, November 28. A cycling road race from Wellington to Trentham and back to Wellington, 42 mile?, took place on Saturday and provided an exciting contest, though the weather was atrocious. The scratch man, Grose, from Christchurch, Gane. 3 minutes, and Hays, 6 minutes, showed splendid form and gradually closed on the long handicap men until at the concluding stages it looked as though a scratch man would win. Carswell, $■ Wellington scratch man. and Oaklej-, Masterton scratch man, also rode well, but Oakley had had luck, sustaining several kpills. Grose parsed a.ll compel itors and was leading entering the city. There was a great finish. Gane made a splendid sprint in the final stage, though Grose made a plucky respohse. An exciting finish was decided on the Basin Reserve. Gane beat Grose by half a. wheel, Hayes (6mins) 3, Robinson (1.1 mins) 4. Toomer (lßrtiins) 5. Honours rested with the visitor, whose performance was loudly acclaimed. The fastest time was put up by R. F. Grose, his time for the distance being 1 hour 55mins 45 l-10secs. The second fastest time was secured by R. Gane (3 minutes), his time being 1 hour 68tnins 45sec8. At the conclusion of the meeting the blue riband was presented to the Canterbury champion, Grose, who received another ox-atlon as he stepped forward. HALSWELL RACE.
