“MISS NEW ZEALAND” LEAVES AUCKLAND.
FINAL SCENE IN BEAUTY CONTEST. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, November 29. A fitting termination to the stay in Auckland of “ Miss New Zealand ” and the other southern beauties was the demonstration accorded them on the railway station last evening when they departed for their homes by the Limited express. When the girls left the Hotel Cargen they were given a send-off by the guests and a crowd that had collected outside. They arrived at the station to find it crowded, and as they made their way towards the gates they were cheered and clapped while their progress was interrupted by people endeavouring to shake hands with individual girls. “ Miss New Zealand ” was given a grand reception, as was also her Maid of Honour, Miss Isobel Wilson. Miss Marie Osten, of Dunedin, came in for her full share of the demonstration, while Miss Doreen M’Cubbin (“ Miss Wellington”), although one of the first out of her car, was the last to gain the platform. There was another enthusiastic scene at the train pulled out. The carriage containing the beauties was surrounded by people, who were lucky enough to have obtained platform passes, and when the whistle went they gave a rousing send-off to the girls, who stood on the carriage platform calling ” Goodbye,” fluttering handkerchiefs and throwing kisses to the crowd. At the stations down the line many people gathered and cheered the girls as the train arrived and departed. In a farewell message Miss M’Millan thanked the Aucklanders for their kindness, and said she was quite downhearted at leaving them. The other girls gave similar messages.
