NEWCASTLE INCENSED AT HOSPITAL BOARD’S APPOINTMENT FROM N.Z.

LOCAL APPLICATIONS SHOULD HAVE BEEN CALLED FIRST OF ALL By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Aus. and N.Z. Cable Association. SYDNEY, November 38. The appointment of Mr Coyle, of Wellington, as secretary of the Newcastle Hospital, is meeting with strong local opposition. A meeting of the Labour Day Committee strongly criticised the Hospital Board for appointing a New Zealander to the position without first calling applications locally. The committee is calling a conference of representatives of the district industrial unions to consider the withdrawal of industrial subscriptions to the hospital, totalling £30,000 annually, until the position is satisfactorily adjusted. Other public bodies have also expressed disapproval with the appointment. The Mayor of Newcastle declared that he could not understand the president of the Hospital Board filling the position without first calling for general applications. He stated that his intention was to call a public meeting to protest against the appointment.
