Cable Association (Received November 29, 11 a.m.) NEW YORK, November 28 At Philadelphia, Professor Godfrey Dewey, of Harvard University, addr'"ssing the English Language Congress, advocated the revision of the alphabet to a system of twenty-four consonants, thirteen vowels, four dipthongs and a symbol for the word “ The.” He declared that this scheme would save a billion dollars yearly. With the new alphabet fewer symbols would be needed to express thoughts and millions of tons of less paper would be necessary. Books at d newspapers would be smaller and lighter, with a consequent saving in time and labour. Professor Dewey declared that the greatest problem of printed English today was typographical.
