PRESS-THE-BUTTON AGE.

To the Editor. Sir,—ls not Dean- Inge drawing a red herring across the track? This is the first intimation we have had that bald heads, small teeth, and small jaws were indications of degeneracy. The. majority of our business men in Christchurch are inclined to baldness upon their heads. Less hair, more brains. The argument that small teeth or small jaws are symptoms of degeneracy is fuzzy. “Pressing the button” does not appeal to the Dean. We had a wonderful picture here in Christchurch some years ago. In it were shown the manifestations of skill. It was the excavation of the Panama Canal. There, under the control of pne man, was machinery moving thousands of tons of rock and earth, every day. He only “pressed a button.” But we agree with the Dean that the people in England are deteriorating. Their immorality is hateful. Their want of modesty is indecent. There are two causes, viz., the selfishness of the wealthy, and in the case of the poor it is despondency. The results—Many cases where, in one or two rooms, married couples live, and give birth to children, sometimes six or seven. Is it not an awful disgrace to the (Government that such immorality is allowed to continue. It is not to be wondered at, that there are so many sexual perverts. When will the wealthy realize that they are their brothers' keepers? It is up against them to see that every parent has proper facilities for the birth and also for the rearing of the coming nation.—l am, etc., PARENT.
