ANIMALS FOR ZOO COME TO AUCKLAND

COLLECTION TO REACH DOMINION ON TUESDAY. Per Pres» Association. AUCKLAND. November 27. Several interesting exhibits for the Auckland Zoo will arrive by the steamer Mahana on Tuesday. A brown bear is the largest specimen in the shipment, whilst two Geladis baboons, a pair of spider monkeys, a pair of mandrill monkeys and an ocelot cat complete the collection as far as the animal world is concerned. For the aviaries there are a pair of geese, two pairs of white swans, five pairs of fancy ducks and a pair of peacock pheasants. The exhibits are part of a collection purchased in England on behalf of the Auckland City Council by the town clerk, Mr J. S. Brigham. Yet to be shipped are a pair of cheetahs, a pair of oryx and an ant-eater. To feed the animals and birds on the long journey from London, a varied menu had to be prepared. For the specimens with dainty palates, the Mahana took on board eighteen dozen lettuces, seventy dozen bananas, three cases of apples annd 1201 b of grapes. The more weighty fare included 11731 b of beef, lewt of carrots, wheat, millet pnd hemp seed, and for the monkeys a Sack of peanuts was shipped. The custodian is also bringing with Jaim a pair of chimpanzees. The Mayor said yesterday that the council would have a look at the latter, and if satisfactory terms could be arranged the council would probably secure them. Mr Brigham had advised that chimpanzees were a great attraction at all the zoos he had visited.
