EVENTS OF THE WEEK

JOTTINGS. The appointment of the clerk of works for the South Brighton Bridge has been left in the hands of Mr Freeman. The Christchurch City Council have decided to support the declaring of Page’s Road a main highway. The following omnibus stands have been appointed in the borough (a) From the junction of Sea View Road and Union Street, along the east side of Union Street, to Beresford Street, and from the junction of Union Street and Beresford Street along the west side of Union Street to Sea View Road. . (b) From the junction of Estuary Road and Betty Street to a point half a chain north and south on the west side of Estuary Road and Beatty Street from the junction of Estuary Road to the Reserve. The taxi stands appointed are:— The north side of Beresford Street, west of Union Street, for a distance of one chain and at Beatty Street, on the east side of Estuary Road, for one chain. GALA. The Mayor (Mr J. Gamble) is calling a meeting in the Council Chambers for Tuesday, November 30, at 8 pan., of those interested in the Central Brighton Gala. Members of sports bodies and all ladies and gentlemen interested are cordially invited. BERESFORD CLUB. The annual meeting of the New Brighton Beresford Club will be held in the club’s rooms on Tuesday, November 30, at 8 p.m. POWER BOAT CLUB. On Wednesday evening the New Brighton Power Boat Club held the first of its summer moonlight runs on the Estuary and lower Avon. Twelve motor boats left the club house at 7 o’clock, and led by the Waikuku, the commodore’s ship, cruised down the river and after a short run over the estuary, tied up at Pleasant Point, where the members and their friends, totalling about sixty, were entertained by Mrs W. Mullon at a musical evening in Pickle’s tearooms. During the evening, the president of the club, Captain A. W. Owles, made a presentation to the hostess. I tents were contributed by Mrs Scrimshaw, Miss G. Weavers, Messrs C. Barnes, C. Wilson, A. W. Owles, Brown, H. Beaumont, W. Wilkins and T. Hughes. ALL NATIONS FAIR. A successful “All Nations Fair” was held by the New Brighton Anglican Chinch in aid of the St Faith’s building fund in Joyland Theatre, New Brighton, on Saturday. The fair was opened in the afternoon by the Mayor, Mr J. Gamble. The theatre presented a gay appearance, each stall having been decorated with the colours and flags of a nation or country, which it was meant to represent, while the helpers in the stalls were dressed in the costumes of their particular country. The stall-holders were: Flower stall (Belgium), Mesdames Winny and Rides; cake stall (France), Mesdames Robins and De Roo; produce stall (America), Mrs A. W. Judge, Misses L. Stevens, D. Knowles, and M. .V. Thompson; works stall (Ireland), Mesdames O. Bergh, 11. A. Glasson, E. Bourdet, and T. Ballantyne; sweets stall (New Zealand), Raumai Club (Miss M. K. Lawrence); books stall (Holland), Mrs and Miss Aslin. basket stall (Japan), Mesdames Ilockley, Lovell, Bargrove, and Samuels; pound stall (England), Girls Guild: Christmas tree, Mesdames H. A. Bishop, and Scrimshaw; ices, Mrs Pearce, Misses L. Hard, P. Dobson, and M. Cambridge; tearooms, Mesdames Sutton, Stevenson and Miss Mazey; side-shows, Messrs Samuels, Underhay and Scott. The secretarial duties were performed by Mr C. Hockley in the absence of Mr Blackburn. The decorations were in the charge of Mrs H. A. Bishop. t The various competitions resulted as follows:—Picture, Miss E. Winny; j Christmas cake, Miss D. Winny; doll, ! Mr G. Jackson; ham, Mr H. Hammond; yacht, Mr Samuels; Cake, Master T. Samuels; cushion, Mrs Dixon; sweets, Miss Bargrove. PRESBYTERIAN An enjoyable social evening organ- j ised by the Presbyterian Church choir, was held on Monday, to do honour to Mr A. M’Kenzie, a valued member, who is going on leave of absence for a time. Items were contributed by: Mesdames Main, M’Kenzie and Wilson, Misses Gibb, Langley and Lightbody; Messrs Gordon, M'Fadezien, and Bernstein. SCHOOL CONfcERT. A concert was held in Joyland Theatre on Wednesday, in aid of the New Brighton School prize fund. Elocutionary items were given by Mr P. L. Davies; vocal items by Misses Peggy M’Creanor, and Neta Ozanne; and dancing items by Misses Joyce Catton, Mavis Smither, and Betty Bennett. The accompaniments were ably played by Miss V. M. Thompson. At the conclusion of the concert, on the motion of Mr H. A. Glasson, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the performers. BOY SCOUTvS. The fourth troop celebrated their first birthday on last Tuesday evening at South Brighton. The evening was spent in games, dancing, plays, and songs. Major Ashworth spoke on the ideals of scouting, and the arrangements which have been made for the combined Christmas camp. Items were given by Messrs Gallagher and Cassin. Votes of thanks were passed to Mesdames Minchall. Webb and Carter, and Miss I. Suiter for their assistance. PERSONAL. The following guests are staying at the New Brighton Cafe: Mrs G. Gould and Miss Murphy (Wellington) ; Mr P. Nicholls, Mrs Clayton, Miss Matheson (Christchurch); Mrs W. Parker (Tai Tapu), Mr Murphy (Leeston), Mrs Murphy (Hals well). SOUTH BRIGHTON NOTES. A pleasant euchre evening was spent at tjie home of Mr Merrett, Richmond Terrace, South Brighton, by the ‘‘Social Friends” last Wednesday evening in aid of the Boy Scouts of South Brighton. Prize winners were. Mrs C. W. Brownlee 1, Mrs Weavers 2. Men, Mr C. Manhire 1, Mr W. H. Merrett 2. Lucky nnumber was won by Miss M. Brown. NORTH BEACH NOTES. CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION The North Beach Y.C.P.T.U. met at Mrs Leavers’ residence on Tuesday evening. Mrs J. F. Eames presided over a good attendance of members. A welcome was extended to Miss Robert- ! son, of the Oxford branch, who has ‘ come to reside in North Beach. At the conclusion of the business, Mrs S.

A. Gonng delivered an interesting and instructive address. Games and community singing were indulged in at the close of the meeting. WAIMAKARIRI RIVER PROTECTION. At the invitation of the Waimakarm River Trust, Rev W. F. Knowles apd Messrs E. A. M. Leaver and D. Wilson accompanied by Mr Harris, assistant engineer* and Colonel A. E. Loach, paid a visit to Clarkville and other parts of the banks of the river. Mr Harris showed the visitors the work that had been done by the trust, and fully explained the proposed scheme for straightening the channel of the river. VISITORS. The fine weather during the week has induced many visitors to the beach. On Tuesday evening there was a record number of motor cars parked on the esplanade between Osborne 'l crrace and the Peace Memorial, the levelling off of the sand hills, affording a clear view of the sea at this spot. The booking of houses for Christmas and New Year has been very heavy and many applicants are. being disappointed. GALA. „ A meeting of the North Beach Ga7a Committee was held in the Peace Memorial Ha[l on Tuesday evening, Mr E. A. M. Leaver presiding over a good attendance. The chairman extended a welcome to a number of new young members of the committee. It was decided to endeavour to secure the use of a sand yacht for Gala Day and to include if possible cycle races and a road race to finish in the vicinity of the Peace Memorial Hall during the afternoon. The secretary reported that arrangements for the various atractions were well in hand. A suggestion was also approved that the committee try to arrange for an Art Gallery at the Gala. SURF CLUB. A well-attended meeting of the North Beach Surf Bathing and Life Saving Society was held in the pavilion. Mr E. A. M. Leaver presided. The balancesheet which had been received at the annual meeting, was adopted. It was decided that the bank account be operated on and cheques signed by the secretary and captain. It was unanimously decided to place on record the club’s appreciation of M,r Arthur Duggan, the retiring auditor. At the request of the organising secretary of the gala, it was decided to endeavour to assist the gala by running an attraction on Gala Day. The club also agreed to take charge of the aquatic events on Gala Day, the prizes for which would be presented by the member for the district at the same time and place on the beach championship races. BAND CONCERT. The New Brighton Muncipal Band under the conductorship of Mr Arthur G. Heath, will play the following programme at North New Brighton on Sunday:—March “Westburv” (Lithgow); Waltz Intermezzo “Queen of Dreams,” overture, “Lustpiel,” (Keler Bela) ; two-step, “O-hi-o” (Alford); cornet solo, “Perfest Day,” soloist, ( Bandsman A. The Rev Robertson, late of Baptist Chinch, Oxford, has come to reside at Berry Street, North Beach. Mrs T. W. Thomson, of Osborne Terrace, is spending u holiday in the country. Mr 11. Pepper, after some months’ absence, has returned to North Beach and is residing with, his son in Osborne Terrace. Mrs Wilson, wife of Mr J. F. Wilson, late of North Beach School, is on a visit to Christchurch. NEW BRIGHTON. CENTRAL GALA.
