By our Special Correspondent

PA PAN UI SCHOOL BAZAAR. | The bazaar held by the Papanui | Scliool Committee on Saturday was responsible for over £SO being netted, which will go towards the picnic and the school grounds improvement fund. The Hon D. Buddo, M.P., in opening the proceedings congratulated the. district on its fine new school building and said it was the envy of Canterbury teachers. He commented on the way the School Committee had worked to put the ground in order, and had planted trees even before the building was erected. The sale was continued until the evening, and at the conclusion the produce, etc., that was left oyer was auctioned by Mr D. Park: ST CECILIA CHOIR. Last Monday’s concert given by the St Cecilia Choir, under Mr Sidney Williamson, was one. of the musical treats that Papanui too rarely gets. But that the a udience appreciated the oppor-. tunity there is no doubt, for the applause was most enthusiastic and at the conclusion the audience refused to go home until a still further encore had been acceded to. When the Waimairi Football Glub stage a euchre party and dance everyone in Papanui sits up and takes notice, so next Tuesday’s big night at the Memorial Hall is bound to be well supported. For the euchre there are four Christmas hams and two Christmas cakes. For the dancers there is Bettle’s five-instrument band and for all a good supper and a good time. There will be a late car to town at 1 a.m., and the prices are popular ones. BOWLING. Championship doubles plaved are:— Bell, Miller (s) 25. Searell adds two more names to those of the old bellringers: Leonard Wilcox and Harold Cooper. The Papanui School, when the grounds are put in order, will have a native garden. This is the gift of an old scholar, Mr Allan Ball, Rotomanu, who sent down .a number of native tree seedlings which the chairman of the committee, Mr G. Allington, has put into a nursery bed ready for next winter’s planting. A meeting of the band committee was held on Thursday. Committees were set up for the forthcoming fete, which will be held in the grounds near St Paul’s Sunday School. Offers of side shows, etc., were received, and it was decided to keep the fete open till 7.30 o’clock in the evening. A movement is on foot to form a Papanui swimming club, the headquarters of which will be the old Papanui school bath. Support has been promised from Belfast, Mairehau and Harewood, so the club should be a success. BUSINESS ANNOUNCEMENT. Mrs W. Heaphy, who has been in business on the North Road for the past three years, has .shifted to her new shop near the corner of Sawyers Arms Road and North Road. PAPANUIPROGRESS Both in the city and Waimairi areas great progress is being made with the various loan works. Sawyers’ Arms Road has been channelled, and in the city the footpaths are being rapidly pushed on with. The old tanks, an eyesore on the North Road for many years, have been taken away. Papanui and Christchurch have tothank the staff of the. Papanui station for the fine garden they' have there. At present it is a picture,' for the roses (and they are good ones) are, in full bloom, and the annuals are just coming into flower. The roses are the gift of Messrs Poison and Baylis, the native shrubs from Mr J. Baxter, and the Department have built a small trellis fence which sets the beds off. As Papanui is one of the. most important gateways to Christchurch, and with the new motor-train-ferry service to Wellington, it will become more so, the staff are assisting in boosting Papanui, Christchurch and the province generally. ST JOSEPH’S CLUB. St Joseph’s Club held their weekly euchre party on Monday evening, when there was a vefy good attendance. The prize-winners were as follows: —Ladies, Mrs W. W. ST SILAS'S. A working bee was held on Saturday last at the mission room, and the gateway and bridge was added to and brought near completion under the supervision of Mr Chamberlain. The mission room has also its own water supply now. A great improvement has been made to the appearance of St Silas’s by the removal of the water tanks which have been there for many years. SUNDAY SCHOOL. St Silas’s Sunday school teachers, together with the fellow teachers from St Paul’s, spent a happy day on Saturday, November 20, when the Sunday School Teachers’ Association held its annual festival in Christchurch. In the morning three celebrations of the Holy Communion were held, and breakfast after the earlier one. In the afternoon the teachers held their garden party at the residence of Mr and Mrs H. D. Andrews, Armagh Street, who kindly laid open their place to the association. Then came high tea at St John’s, after which was held a short service in St John’s Church. The final feature was the association meeting, at which his Lordship the Bishop presided for a part of the time. Professor Shelley then gave a most interesting address to the members present, which closed the function for the day. STYX PERSONALS. Miss I. Griffiths, of Christchurch, was the guest of Miss D.
