COUNTRY IS LOOKING IN SPLENDID HEART.
Never has the countryside of North Canterbury looked better. Luxuriant growth is a feature of all crops, and feed is abundant. The heavier lands arc carrying a wealth of clover and grasses, and cattle, which wintered well, are in the best of condition. Unchecked growth of feed, oats and grass on the lighter soils has put sheep and lambs in splendid fettle. Grass-seed shut off for harvesting or stripping is coming to a good brown head. Oats, not showing too much straw, are in most cases well out in ear, and will be ready for the reaper and binder about Christmas time. Wheat, of which there appears to be an area sown quite as great as last year, is showing healthy colour, and is giving signs of coming out into ear.
The heavy downpour of some weeks ago has left the subsoil with plenty of moisture to draw upon. Scorching north-west winds in the last week or so have dried the surface, and, though ploughed lands have been made lumpy, the dryness is assisting in the killing of weeds and the cleaning of land for turnips.
