Miss Iris A tack, -who has been for a holiday visit to America, has returned to Christchurch.

Mr H. Y. Widdowson and Mrs Widdowson, left yesterday for Hanmer, where they will spend a holiday of two or three weeks.

Mrs M. Iv. Case (New York) is among the guests at Warner's Hotel.

Mr and Mrs F. S. Carmichael (Wellington.) and Mrs H. Nicholls and the Misses Nicholls (Rakaia) are at the Clarendon Hotel.

Mr and Mrs Johnston (Lenzie, Scotland), Miss Fulford (Timaru), Mrs C. R. Booth (Oamaru), Mrs Chappie (Oamaru) and Miss E. N. King (Oamaru) are at the United Service Hotel.

Mrs J. Cooke and Miss Mildred Cooke, Rugby Street, who are the guests of Mrs G. L. Rutherford, Macdonald Downs, will return to Christchurch on Sunday.

A jumble sale in aid of the Opawa Branch of the British Seamen’s Society will be held in St. Andrew’s Schoolroom to-morrow afternoon at 2 o’clock.

Mrs M. G. Golding (Rangiora), who has been on a holiday visit to England and India for the past eleven months, arrived home yesterday. Mrs Horace Thompson and Miss Piri Thompson, who have been on an extended tour abroad, will return to Christchurch on Tuesday. Mr and Mrs Sargood returned to Dunedin to-day after a brief stay in Christchurch.

Miss Jimsie C. Fraser, the accomplished Dunedin artist, and her business manager, Mr S. W. Francis, have just returned from a trip abroad which has lasted two years and four months. Miss Fraser has completed her paints mg studies in London, and after flying over to Paris and then touring Egypt and Italy, a tour through Ceylon and afterwards Australia brought an interesting return journey to a clbse. After staying here a few days Miss Fraser and Mr Francis will return to Otago. They are the guests of Mr and Mrs Jervois Wilson, of 51, Sherborne Street, while in Christchurch. An enjoyable evening was spent last Saturday at their residence, Hoon Hay Road, Spreydon, when Mr and Mrs W. Leek celebrated the birthdays of their sons, Carl and Jack. Competitions, games and dancing were enjoyed, the winners of the competitions being Misses J. Pierson and M. Green and Mr J. Pierson. The music was supplied by Misses I. Moyna and J. Pierson. Among those present were:— Misses J. Pierson, I. Moyna, E. M’Kechnie, E. Holmes, R. Wilkinson, M. Green, I. Kingdon, J. Lilley and N. Plank, Messrs J. Pierson, F. Pierson, L. Moyna, K. M’Clelland, G. Marshall, C. Beckingsale, R. Stanton, G. Pierson, C. Leek, J. Leek, and Mr and Mrs F. Pierson. The wedding of Dr A. J. Harrdp, formerly of Christchurch, and now of the “Daily Mail” editorial staff, London, to Miss Hilda M. F. Valentine, second daughter of Mr and Mrs J. A Valentine, Martin’s-in-the-Fields, took place on September 20, states an English exchange. The bride, who is a graduate of Canterbury College (Christchurch, New Zealand), was given away by Mr G. T. Cuthbert, brother-in-law of the bridegroom. .Alter the wedding a luncheon was held at the Criterion Restaurant, Piccadilly, Mrs Cuthbert acting as hostess. The guests included Mr and Mrs Fenton Macpherson, Mr and Mrs H. T. B. Drew, Captain and Mrs C. J. Sutton, and Mr S. R. Gardner. A cable of congratulation was received from the High Commissioner of New Zealand, in which Sir James Parr made reference to the fact that the bride was a daughter of one of his oldest friends in New Zealand. Amongst other cables of congratulation from New Zealand were three from the staff and pupils of the New Plymouth Girls' High School, at which institution the bride was recently a teacher. Last night, in the Caledonian Hall, before a big attendance, Misses Madeline Vyner and Iris Montgomery, with their pupils, were seen in a programme iof dances of various kinds, and they gave a performance in every way meritorious*, creditable to the principals and pupils alike. The performers ranged from tiny tots to adults, and variation was provided by two scenas in which there were songs. The costuming was remarkably good, and the accompaniments by an orchestra, in which Mrs Roy Twyneham was leader, were all that could be desired. Miss Nancy Hume was at the piano, and the stage management was admirably carried out by Miss Ngaio Marsh.
