GOSSIP FROM THE QUEEN CITY.
(Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, November 26. “A Standing Disgrace.” The transport problem in districts west of the city was discussed at a representative conference at Avondale last evening. The Mayor of Avondale presided, representatives being present from Waitemata County Council and the New Lynn, Glen Eden, and Henderson Town Boards, and from Titirangi. The chairman said that the western local bodies had suffered severely since the introduction on November 1 of the new regulations governing transport services. It was hoped that some solution could be found which would result better management of the bus services affecting western suburbs. Mr W. G. Lovie (New Lynn) said that it was very doubtful whether trams would ever rpach their districts and the only practical service which would make for closer settlement was that provided by the buses, whose existence was now jeopardised by recent legislation. The following motion was carried: “This conference considers it a standing disgrace and a travesty of British justice that the largest owner of transport services in Auckland should act as a licensing authority and sit in judgment upon its competitors.” A further motion was carried urging the amendment of the Motor Omnibus Act and the transfer of power to grant license? to an independent tribunal of magistrates until a permanent Transport Board could be set up. It was decided to call a conference of representatives of local bodies interested to consider the question of purchasing their own transport service for the western suburbs.
