TENNIS CHALLENGERS FOR RANKING PLACES.
T 11. W. Sheppard, playing F. S. Wilding yesterday for fifth place on the Canterbury ranking list, won G-4, G-2. It was a very hot nor’-westerly day and both players preferred safe to brilliant tennis. Sheppard was steadier all round, while Wilding missed a good deal in excursions to the net. Rather unexpectedly IT. S. Eaton beat W. S. Somerville for sixteenth place on the list by 6-3, 6-4. Somerville served very well, but Eaton returned the services with a heavy chop. Somer'HUe could make no headway against bis steadier PpponenC and did not get anv strength into his strokes, strike * proper length 6t hit freely. H. >3. Wilkinson met with * painful mishap lAfet iU&ht when he was struck by a rising bad! He was kndeked out temporarily, and possibly will not be playing for a day or two.
