Speaking of the future of motion pictures, Joseph M. Schcnck, producer of Norma and Constance Talmadge photoplays, recently said: “If a man knew and could tell in advance what the public wants, he could name his own salary. A few years ago directors thought the public wanted gigantic sets with thousands of people. Then the directors came to the conclusion that the public wanted costume pictures. Next, the comedians became convinced that the public was tired of custard pies. Long ago the leading stars turned their thumbs down on Indian-cowbov dramas, and then came ‘The Covered Wagon’ to disprove their theories. I predict that there is going to be a swing-back to the stories of 10 and 15 years ago, done in modern style and with modern technical methods.” * st

In* “It Must be Love,” Colleen Moore plays the daughter of a gruff German delicatessen merchant, and in that role, elicits laugh and chuckle, with a plentiful portion of intermittent sobs. Colleen has a wistful way with her that fits admirably into this story.

Raymond Griffith has made an immense hit in his latest comedy-drama, “You’d be Surprised,” which some New York critics lavishly praise as by far the best thing he has done. Disguised as a coroner, Griffith goes through mental gymnastics' in the untangling of a murder 'mystery which would do credit to any sleuth. Instead of solving the mystery he finds himself in the centre of a dozen others, and also discovers that he has fallen in love with the girl who every one suspects is the criminal. It nearly requires two more murders to impanel the Coroner’s' jury, and then the romance rather iipsets the Coroner’s reasoning powers. The successful spy drama, "Three Faces East,” has been made into a picture by. Cecil De Mille. Clive Brook scores in one of the principal parts, that of a spy who masquerades as a butler. It is one of the strongest roles he has undertaken. Equally remarkable is said to be the emotional acting of Jetta Goudal, whose interpretation of the woman spy has done much towards bringing her to stellar prominence. Amongst the big thrijls in “Three Faces East” is a Zeppelin raid on London, in which the great airships are shown riding in the glare of the searchlights, and actually hit in midair and brought down by the antiaircraft fire. Submarine warfare is/seen, and intimate details of the workings of the Secret Service are revealed.

“ It. is not so long ago,” says Michael Orme, an English writer, “ that each successive film I went to see included a .swirqming pool orgy, until one might .be- excused, for thinking that every wealthy individual in America preferred to give his dinner partifes at. the edge of his private swimming bath, .wherein maidens disported themselves almost as scantily clad as the nymph. At another period, I remember, there was quite a run on elaborately wrought metal gates—presumably of gold—that hid the heroine's silken couch behind their intricate tracery. Now I am quite prepared to believe that Hollywood goes to bed through golden gate ways.”

In his first starring picture, “ It’s the Old Army Game,” \V. C. Fields’s bag of tricks seems to be a bottomless one. The story is slight; merely that of a small town chemist who becomes involved in a scheme to .sell New York real estate to the native sons of Florida. However, Fields, who is one of the greatest stage comedians in America, makes the most, of each amusing situation as it arises. He will be remembered as the circus crook in “ Sally of the Sawdust."
