Civil servants in Britain have been reduced in number by 95.666 since July 1919. There are now about 301,900, of whom nearly 50 per cent are ex-service men.
On the highways and the byways they are still arguing about the fight (sav-s a writer in the “New York Tribune.” a week after Dempsey was dethroned). As the bout is more soberly surveyed the admiration for Gene
Tunney increases. Tunney was smart enough to take the play away from Dempsey at the start. His fleet footwork prevented Dempsey from getting inside Tunney’s defence. When Dempsey found out early in the first round that he couldn't crowd Tunney and gei in a position to deliver his short hooks, Dempsey’s whole plan of campaign was upset. Another thing which Tunney should receive full credit for was the variety of his attack. He mixed his blows like a good baseball pitcher mixes up the curves he throws. Tunney never did anything in repetition to give Dempsey a chance to anticipate what was coming. Tunney displayed a versatility of attack which he never has shown before. Dempsey’s fight looked so bad simply because Tunney was smart enough not to permit him to fight his fight the wav he wanted to and the way he fought all his other fights.
