THE SHORTENING SKIRT.
Some of the autumn frocks have skirts whifch finish quite definitely above the knee. Last season frocks looked as short as this when the wearer walked, but were actually' a trifle longer. If the skirts of plain velvet afternoon frocks are short, those of evening frocks are shorter still; indeed, the actual frock is often only a tunic, though fringe, strings of, beads, ostrich feather, or strip? of the material embroidered in diamante, fall below the hem. Shadowy, transparent, and even ragged effects are achieved, so that the modem girl in her dance frock may suggest a water nymph, the English heroine of a “desert island” play, or even a graceful savage.
