POLICE OFFICER’S DEATH REPORTED.
SUPERINTENDENT OF OTAGO, MR W. MATHIESON, HAD VERY USEFUL CAREER The death occurred to-day at Dunedin of Superintendent W. Mathieson of the police force. The late Mr MathiesOn was an extremely well-known and highly respected officer of the New Zealand Police Force, in which body he had a long and useful career. Irt the early days of his life he was stationed at Lumsden. Southland, where he was constable in charge, and filled a number of offices usually allotted to the countrv police station. Mr MathiesOn eventually was promoted to sergeant, and his advancement from • then on was rapid He was stationed at Christchurch for sOme years as seniorsergeant and sub-inspector. From Christchurch he went to Napier, bav ing been promoted to the rank of inspector. Shortly afterwards he was again promoted and went to Dunedin, where he established his headquarters as superintendent in charge of the Otago district. His death will be sincerely regretted by the police force and also by those who came in contact with him during the course of his duty.
