GLANVILLE BEATS T. W. PATTERSON IN STRAIGHT SETS.
HARD COURT CHAMPION BEATEN AT OWN GAME.
Leading 5-0 in both sets, D. F. Glanville beat T. W. Patterson 6-4, 6-1 yesterday for third place on the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s ranking list. In a baseline game Patterson had little hope of survival. He is the present holder of the Canterbury championship, which he won in 1925 and 1926 (on hard courts), and his game is remarkably sound, but Glanville is the harder hitter, and on grass, fit and well, has always been ranked much higher than his younger opponent.
Glanville is another of the players who may go further this year. Greenwood who is above him beat him for the Canterbury championship 7-5, 7-5,
a few j’ears ago, and on form last year is entitled to second place, but the meeting of these two should be very interesting. Glanville for a couple of seasons has been more or less “crockHis friends are wondering whe» thejr he will keep fit this year and bring off some surprises. Dr J. T. Laurenson, ex New Zealand champion, is visiting Christ church, but will leave for *’orth
tonight. It is understood that he has no designs on the championship this year, but may enter in next year’s championships.
