SPORTS AT MONICA PARK, WITH LARGE SUM AS PRIZE MONEY.

A meeting; of the Management Committee of the Monica Park SpOrts Association was held on Tuesday everting, Dr Thacker presiding over a very large attendance. The club has been formed for the purpose of running sports meetings, carnivals. etc. A big “Gala Carnival” will be held on January 19 to 22. It is proposed to hold a wood-chopping and sawing competition for big stakes, and as support has been promised by the leading axemen of the Dominion, a highly interesting event should take place. There is Also to be a big tug-of-war contest with the New Zealand champion team competing, inf Act the entries include all of the leading teams of the South Island, so that something really worth while may be expected. A baby show on a very big scale will be included for prizes quite beyond anything yet offered in Christchurch. A “Beauty” contest run on novel lirfcs 'is' another feature that should prove highly interesting and the winners are to receive valuable gifts. Side shows are also to be provided on a lavish scale, whilst novelty and amuring contests such as climbing the “Greasy Pole,” and the “Greasy Pig,” event will cause endless amusement. Monica Park has been secured on very liberal terms arid the grounds are to DO electrically lit for the occasion. The total prize money will be in the vicinity of £500; this will ensure the very finest talent competing in the various events. Strong sub-committees have been formed with the following in charge:— Wood-Chopping and sawing, Messrs Behan and Webb: tug-of-war, Messrs Blakewav, Brown and Brosnahan; side shows, Messrs Hunter and Webb; publicity, Messrs Donnelly and M’Keon: baby show, Mesdames Bellamy and Cox.
