What is believed to be the first instance of a railroad ever offered b> public auction occurred when the Chicago-Milwaukee and St Paul Railroad was sold in this manner at Butte, Montana, for 140,000,000 dollars. It also constitutes one of the largest financial transactions in the history of the United States. The purchasers were representatives of the Kuhn, Loeb Company. New York financiers, and the National City Company of New York, reorganisation managers.
