JUSTICES OF PEACE MEET IN COUNCIL.
A meeting of the council of the Canterbury Justices of the Peace Association was held in the Chamber of Commerce last night; present—Messrs Alfred Williams (president), IT. Herbert Smith, C. 11. Gilby, G. E. Franklin, TV. H. Seed, F. B. Creswell, J. W. Baty and J. Russell Brunt (registrar). An apology for absence was received from Mr A. 11. Hobbs. Votes of sympathy were accorded the relatives of the late -Walter Hill, Thomas Waddell, J. P. W. Lee, and J. Lowthian "Wilson, and to Messrs James Cow (Tinwald) and H. A. Bruce in thenrecent family bereavements. Correspondence was read from Mr Stanley Grutt, J.P., Waimate, asking for information regarding the formation of a. branch or an association in Wnimate. The registrar reported having supplied the necessary information, suggesting the amalgamation of Waimate, Timaru and Temuka in the formation of one association. His action was approved. Mr J. W. Patton, Secretary of the Otago Justices’ Association, acknowledged the receipt of a circular on instructions regarding administering an oath. Mr J. GArrie, J.P., secretary of the North Otago justices' Association, wrote thanking the Canterbury Association for their good wishes. He also forwarded a report of their recant annual meeting, And stated that the meeting had decided to have the association incorporated. Mr J H. FrAy. J.P., Auckland, forwAfded a. Circular letter to the effect that it had been decided to publish a Justices’ quarterly journal, the first to be issued in December. He also asked the realstrar to Supply note* or Interest. The letter was received. The registrar of the Queensland Association sent his greetings and .a list of their officers for the ensuing year. Mr R. P. Ward, J.P., union secretary, forwarded a further supply of official stamps for the use of the association. Mr W. J. Chaney, J.P., registrar of the Taranaki Justices’ Association, forwarded a copy of the annual report, showing one hundred members. Mr Angus Cameron (Waipara), Mr IT. Aeton-Adams (Tipapa) and Mr John Penny were unanimously elected members: Messrs James Leslie (Islington) and
Geo. P. Kissel (Templeton) were congratulated on their appointment as visiting Justices to the paparua Prison. The honorary solicitor, Mr S. E. M’Carth-y, supplied the association with his opinion ns to the value of those associations which are incorporated over those which are unincorporated. Mr M’Carthy was thanked for his opinion, members of the council all agreeing with his view*. Mr C. H. Gilby (vice-president), who as the association delegate accompanied Mr H. Herbert Smith (president of the Justices' Federation), reported on their meeting with the Wellington and Auckland delegates. It was reported that matters in dispute had been settled, and future success was assured. The next annual meeting of the federation was arranged to be held in Dunedin in March. Messrs C. IT. Gilby and H. Herbert .Smith were thanked for the success of their visit to Auckland.
