The buildings inspector had made an examination and reported that the barge board over the dressing-room was rotten and had become loose, allowing rain to be blown in. The spouting at the back of the hall was also rusted through and the barge board at the south side required replacing. These repairs, together with the replacement of nine broken windows, would cost about £l2 12s to execute and the committee had authorised the work to be put in hand. The report was adopted. REMIT FOR MUNICIPAL CONFERENCE. The By-laws Committee recommended that the following remit should be forwarded for consideration at the next Municipal Association’s Conference: —•• That it shall not be lawful for the District Land Registrar to register any memorandum of transfer or agreement to purchase or lease any property without, production of a certificate from the local body concerned to the effect that all rates and charges collectable as rates due on such property are paid.” The recommendation was approved. Instructions had been given to discontinue the dumping of rubbish on the section in question, and arrangements were being made t.o have the discoloured walls repainted. The quarry manager had drawn attention to the fact that the maintenance of No. 1 crusher had been very expensive during the past. year. This particular crusher had been in use for some time, and the manager stated that a serious breakdown would disorganise the working of the quarry. The committee therefore recommended that authority be given to order a new crusher, the old one to‘be used as a standby. The estimated cost of the proposed new machine was £IO4O, added to which would he the cost of erection, approximately £250. The owner of a shop at the corner of Stapleton’s and Shirley Roads, North Richmond, had asked whether it would be possible for the footpath in front of his shop to be raised. Tfe stated that the footpath was well below the crown of the road, and ran in a slope from Petrie Street to Stapleton’s Road, which necessitated practically three steps at the entrance to his shop, i-le further stated that he was prepared to supply the necessary soil provided the council would carry out the work. As the 'Works Department would he conducting channelling operations ii\ the locality shortly, arrangements were being made to effect some improvement to the footpath. The report was adopted. With regard to the purchase of a new crusher, it was decided that the tenders should be placed before the council before the order was finally placed.
