Permission has been granted by the City Council to the Woos ton Band to give a concert at the Victoria Square band rotunda on Sunday, December 5, and Derry’s Band has been granted a permit for Sunday, December 19. At the meeting of the City Council last ni&ht, Councillor O. W. B. Anderson said he had noticed that the City Engineer had agreed to give a report on highway research to an outside body. He asked if permission had been given to the engineer to report to the outside body, in view cf the fact that the council was anxiously waiting for his report in connection with the city highways. Councillor E. H. Andrews, chairman of the Works Committee, said that he had given permission to the engineer to give the report. The matter would not interfere with the work of the council, because the report was one that had already been prepared in connection with another city, and all that the City Engineer had to do was to hand it As it has been found that many of those making the walk from Arthur’s Pass to Otira on the occasion of the Railway Department’s excursions to Otira have shown a tendency to hurry unnecessarily for fear of missing the train on the return journey, the Department has arranged to provide a guide for the next excursion, which takes places on Sunday, December 5. The guide, who is one of the railway officers, will wear a distinctive badge, He will walk over the pass with the main body of the excursionists, and will explain features of the scenery to those interested. It will also be his duty to see that no one misses the train, and it is expected that his presence among the walkers will have a very reassuring effect in that direction. The distance from Arthur’s Pass to Otira is approximately ten miles, and ample time is allowed for the walk and for a halt for lunch at either Arthur’s Pass or Otira. # A request for an extension of the postman’s delivery on Mount Pleasant was made recently to the Chief Postmaster (Mr H. P. Donald) by Mr J. M Combs, MP, and Messrs Webb and Williams. After the matter had been verv fully inquired into and submitted to the head office for consideration, the Chief Postmaster advised Mr M Combs that it was regretted that the extension' could not be granted at present, but that the application would be reviewed in twelve months luce. A request for the extension of the afternoon delivery to the boundary of the present morning delivery has been granted and will come into operation immediately.
